珊瑚堆满了一个玻璃缸……

它散发出光，就如同璀璨的焰火在熄灭前的瞬间，映亮的一片天空。在真实的海洋中，这些不同种类的珊瑚并不会共同生活在一起，但有一个特点，是它们共同都具备的……

“这些不同种类的珊瑚全都是采取共生生活方式的！”整合生物学系的主任弗吉尼亚.魏斯(Virginia Weis)一边向我介绍，一边打量着玻璃缸。“在每一个活珊瑚的体内，都有藻类与之共生，没有了它们，珊瑚们就会白化，最后死去。”珊瑚们将这些单细胞的光合藻类吞入体内，但并不会将它们消化掉——这样做是为了获得藻类光合作用过程中产生的糖。作为回报，珊瑚们除了为藻类提供舒适的安乐窝之外，还为藻类的生存提供营养。
